Recreation and Social Activities – Sue Hensler

Happy Hour in the Park

It’s time to dust off your picnic basket and cooler and join your friends and meet new neighbors at the first-of-the-season “Happy Hour in the Park! This fun, very informal event happens the third Friday of each month. April’s event will be held Friday, April 19, from 5:00 p.m. to whenever at the POA pavilion, next to the pool. BYOB and any food items for the “sharing table” and enjoy an early evening get-together for conversation and camaraderie. There are no organized plans - just a great opportunity to meet and greet new neighbors you may not know and connect with those you do.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

Stack of booksThe Book Discussion group met on Friday, March 15. We had a fascinating discussion about two books, both nonfiction and both having to do with water-related disasters. Ruthless Tide by Al Roker is the harrowing account of the Johnstown flood of 1889, and The Wager by David Grann tells the story of the shocking events surrounding the 1741 wreck of the British ship the HMS Wager, which met its doom while rounding Cape Horn. Survival and man’s inhumanity to man were strong themes in both books, and most members felt that they were captivating reads.

Our next meeting will be held in the large room of the POA clubhouse on Friday, April 19, at 10:00 a.m. We will be discussing Carolina Moonset, a mystery set in Beaufort, South Carolina by Matt Goldman.

Garden Club – Mary Conover

A close-up of a garden

Description automatically generatedCarolina Shores Garden Club members were treated to a presentation by John H. Harrelson from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission on March 13. He explained that residential development negatively impacts alligators by infringing upon their habitats. Humans and pets should always maintain a safe distance from alligators and respect them as part of our ecosystem. It is against the law to feed alligators because they will become more comfortable and expect feedings. Alligators have existed, in some form, for at least 8 million years.

At the April 10 meeting, garden club member, Sherry Godfrey, will demonstrate a unique way of planting, Kokedama and Kusamon. There will also be a plant exchange. Members may bring as many as three plants, labeled with the plant’s name and care instructions, and trade for other plants. The plants may be indoor or outdoor plants. Also, tickets for the annual scholarship luncheon will be available. The luncheon will be held at Brunswick Plantation on May 8 at noon with a cash bar opening at 11:30. If the weather allows, we will be seated on the patio. Tickets are $24 and will be available at the April meeting.

New members are always welcome at the garden club. The meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month, and annual dues are $10. Meetings always include a guest speaker, a plant raffle and a social hour. This year, the club is raffling a quilt also. Tickets are sold at every event and the winner will be chosen at the May luncheon. Please contact Mary Conover at 703-409-9612 with any questions.
